Nucleus Coffee Tools Pty Ltd is an Australian specialty coffee equipment manufacturer founded by Saša Šestić, the 2015 World Barista Champion and the person credited with introducing carbonic maceration processing to specialty coffee. Director Sam Corra was runner-up at the 2017 World Brewers Cup. The team has collectively operated four coffee farms, a world-renowned roastery, and some of Australia’s most innovative coffee bars, and has collaborated with the world’s leading coffee research university in Switzerland. Nucleus sells exclusively through resellers — no direct-to-consumer sales — with a global distributor and service centre network.

The LINK is Nucleus’s flagship product for the specialty roasting market: a hot-air convection sample roaster for 50–100 g batches, designed for green coffee evaluation, roast profile development, and competition preparation.

Technology and Design

The LINK uses hot-air convection (no drum) with a notable thermal approach: roasting begins at room temperature, with the internal bean temperature matching the ambient temperature from the very first second. This differs from conventional drum roasters, which pre-heat to a charge temperature before loading beans. Claimed effects:

  • More even roast development
  • Lower CO₂ levels in the finished bean (earlier readiness to taste)
  • Earlier and more accurate expression of the coffee’s cup profile

Fan speed calibration allows adjustment for elevation and atmospheric conditions — directly relevant for roasting at altitude (El Salvador’s highlands, or any origin sample-roasting facility). (source: Nucleus Coffee Tools (website))

Competition Credentials

World Coffee Roasting Championship (WCRC)

The LINK is the official sample roaster of the WCRC 2024–2027, provided to all competitors — the highest-profile endorsement a sample roaster can receive. Nucleus and Kaffelogic co-sponsor this sponsorship (see Partnership section). Additional official sponsorships in 2024: Korea, Indonesia, Taiwan, Poland, Czech Republic, and Thailand national championships. (source: Nucleus Coffee Tools (website))

World Brewers Cup (WBrC)

  • 2024: Martin Wölfl (Austria) — 1st place using the LINK
  • 2021: Matt Winton (Switzerland) — 1st place (attributed to the LINK by Nucleus; see note below)

Note: The Kaffelogic page also claims 2 WBrC championship wins for the Nano 7, and identifies Carlos Medina as a WBrC champion using the Kaffelogic. Since the LINK was commercially launched around 2022–2023 (earliest product page content dates from January 2023), Matt Winton’s 2021 win predates the LINK’s public availability — it is likely Winton used the Kaffelogic Nano 7, not the LINK. The 2021 attribution in Nucleus’s marketing may refer to Winton’s involvement with the Nucleus/Kaffelogic ecosystem during prototype development. Verification needed.

Kaffelogic Partnership

Nucleus Coffee Tools and Kaffelogic (New Zealand) maintain a significant technical and commercial partnership:

  • LINK Studio software is served from Kaffelogic’s web infrastructure (webservices.kaffelogic.com/downloads/link-studio-*)
  • The two companies jointly sponsor the WCRC as co-official sample roasters 2024–2027
  • The LINK and the Kaffelogic Nano 7 represent complementary products from the same Oceanian ecosystem: one maximizing portability and competition credentials (LINK), the other emphasizing batch flexibility and open software control (Nano 7)

This partnership has not been widely publicized but is apparent from the software download URLs. (source: Nucleus Coffee Tools (website))

YouRoast Program

Via the YouRoast initiative, Nucleus connects LINK users with exclusive and rare green coffees sourced from producing countries where the company has established relationships. Nucleus develops custom roasting profiles for these specific lots, which can then be replicated exactly by any LINK user worldwide.

This program is relevant to Kaiserblick: a future YouRoast collaboration would allow El Salvador micro-lots to reach a global audience of engaged specialty roasters, each roasting from the same verified profile. (source: Nucleus Coffee Tools (website))

Relevance to Kaiserblick

The LINK is one of three leading sample roasters (alongside ROEST and IKAWA) with strong specialty/competition credentials. Key considerations for Kaiserblick:

  • Altitude calibration: Fan speed calibration for elevation is a concrete advantage at Kaiserblick’s origin facility or roastery in El Salvador’s highlands
  • Room-temperature start: removes the pre-heating step common to drum roasters, potentially simplifying on-site use at origin
  • YouRoast: a potential channel for marketing Kaiserblick micro-lots to a global network of specialty roasters
  • Competition ecosystem: the LINK’s WCRC sponsorship means competition-track buyers and roasters worldwide will be familiar with the machine
