CoffeePirates Vienna is a specialty coffee roastery and coffee shop founded in 2012 in Vienna’s 9th district (Alsergrund). It was the first EU organic-certified 3rd wave specialty roastery in Vienna and remains one of the city’s leading specialty operators.

Identity

  • Founded: 2012, Vienna (1090 Alsergrund)
  • Type: Roastery + two café locations + wholesale supplier
  • Locations: Spitalgasse 17 (main café) and Spitalgasse 15 (bakery), 1090 Wien
  • Brand positioning: “Brew Without Borders” — highest-quality, responsibly traded coffees roasted in Vienna; modern translation of the traditional Viennese coffeehouse culture
  • Instagram: @coffeepirates_vienna

Sourcing Philosophy

Coffee Pirates is built on organic and direct-trade values:

  • Full EU organic (BIO) certification across the entire product range — this appears to be a hard catalogue requirement, not optional
  • Travel to origin countries to build direct, long-term farmer relationships
  • Pays 3–5× above Fairtrade or market prices to reward exceptional processing and quality
  • Partners with trusted importers for some lots (e.g., Costa Rica via Peter Scheiber/el.kaffee)
  • Explicit “people and stories” philosophy: full producer transparency on packaging and product pages

Current Origins and Portfolio

As of April 2026: Colombia, Brazil (including water decaf), Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Bali, Indonesia, Kenya, China. No El Salvador in the current catalogue.

Roasts for both filter and espresso (two BIO blends: Pirates Blend Modern Espresso, Troublestarter Classic Espresso; several single-origins available for espresso use).

Wholesale

Coffee Pirates actively supplies roasted coffee and baked goods to wholesale accounts. The wholesale page (coffeepirates.at/pages/wholesale) has a contact form for enquiries.

Fit for Kaiserblick

HIGH fit. Key alignment factors:

  • Organic/BIO requirement matches Kaiserblick’s organic farming approach — EU organic certification will be needed to supply them
  • Direct-trade, premium-pricing philosophy aligns with Kaiserblick’s value proposition
  • No El Salvador in catalogue — clear origin gap to fill
  • Active wholesale programme; open to new producer relationships
  • Vienna base = Austrian market entry point; proximity to Goldkind (Marchtrenk) confirms AT specialty buyers cluster around BIO supply chains

Key risk: Kaiserblick must have (or be working toward) EU organic certification before approaching Coffee Pirates, as their entire catalogue is BIO.

Approach: Contact via wholesale page form or office@coffeepirates.at; propose a sample lot from an organically farmed micro-lot at Finca San Cayetano or Kaiserblick’s Apaneca farms.

Goldkind Connection

Coffee Pirates’ cascara product page credits Uschi Zimmermann from Goldkind Kaffee with lobbying EU authorities to lift a cascara sales ban, indicating an existing relationship between the two Austrian specialty operators. See Goldkind Coffee.
