Rainforest Alliance (RA) is an international non-profit organization that certifies farms, forestry operations, and supply chains against a comprehensive sustainability standard. In the coffee industry it is one of the three most recognized certifications alongside EU Organic and Fairtrade.
The Rainforest Alliance merged with UTZ Certified in 2018, consolidating two of the most common agricultural sustainability standards under one seal. The combined certification covers a broad range of criteria organized into smart standards for farms and supply chains.
What certification requires
Rainforest Alliance certification includes requirements across three pillars:
Social: no child labor; improved labor standards; fair wages; worker health and safety; access to housing, sanitation, and health care
Environmental: no harmful agrochemicals; flora and fauna protection; biodiversity preservation; water source protection; reduced deforestation
Economic: sustainable farm management practices; traceability of certified product through the supply chain
Rainforest Alliance in El Salvador
Several El Salvador specialty producers hold Rainforest Alliance certification:
- Odyssey Coffees — certified across all six farms; biodiversity reserve maintained at Finca Las Isabellas
- Tierra Bendita — Rainforest Alliance listed among awards/certifications
- The Barn Coffee Roasters — partner farms include Rainforest Alliance certified operations
For Kaiserblick Specialty Coffee, the farm transition is currently following MAOES organic principles toward EU Organic certification. Rainforest Alliance is a complementary or alternative path relevant for international buyers who require a recognized third-party standard without the full organic requirement.
Market relevance
Rainforest Alliance is widely recognized by European and North American buyers and retailers. It is a common requirement or strong preference in mainstream specialty and commercial-grade purchasing, though the most discerning specialty buyers (top-tier roasters, direct-trade) often consider it a baseline rather than a differentiator. For export market positioning, RA certification broadens the buyer pool and enables supply chain traceability claims.
