Sudan Rume

Sudan Rume (also written Rume Sudan) is a wild Ethiopian coffee variety originating from the Boma Plateau region near the Sudan-Ethiopia border. It is considered one of the highest-quality coffee varieties in the world for cup character, but is extremely low-yielding and difficult to grow commercially, which limits its presence to specialty-focused farms.

Genetic Significance

Sudan Rume is a wild Coffea arabica variety — not a bred or selected cultivar but a naturally occurring form. Its genetic distinctiveness from the mainstream Bourbon and Typica lineages makes it valuable both for direct production and as a parent in breeding programmes.

Relevance to Kaiserblick: Sudan Rume is the genetic parent of Ethiosar, which is grown at Finca San Cayetano. Ethiosar is a triple cross — Rume Sudan × Sarchimor, then crossed with Villa Sarchi — producing a rust-resistant variety with approximately twice the yield of Red Bourbon and good cup quality. At Finca Los Pirineos

Sudan Rume is one of four cultivars that Diego Baraona has chosen as focus varieties for Finca Los Pirineos going forward — alongside Pacamara, Pink Bourbon, and Bourbon Elite. This decision reflects Diego’s strategic focus on premium, differentiated varieties rather than volume production. (source: Tim Wendelboe (website))

Cup Profile

Sudan Rume is generally described in specialty coffee circles as producing an intensely aromatic, complex, and clean cup — with characteristics closer to Ethiopian heirloom coffees than typical Central American varieties. Expect floral, jasmine, stone fruit, and delicate citrus notes at high altitude with careful processing. Specific cup notes from Los Pirineos are not documented in current wiki sources.
