Cuscatleco

Cuscatleco (also catalogued as T5296) is an Arabica variety developed in El Salvador by the Fundación Salvadoreña para Investigaciones del Café (PROCAFÉ). It originates from a pedigree selection within the Sarchimor lineage — a family derived from Timor Hybrid × Villa Sarchí — and was bred as a Central American selection.

Agronomic Profile

  • Lineage: Sarchimor type (Timor Hybrid × Villa Sarchí), pedigree line T5296
  • Developed by: PROCAFÉ (El Salvador)
  • Altitude: Adapted to medium-altitude growing conditions
  • Disease resistance: Improved resistance to coffee leaf rust (roya) vs. older cultivars such as Tekisic and Bourbon
  • Agronomic qualities: Better overall agronomics than many older Salvadoran cultivars

Context

Cuscatleco was developed to address El Salvador’s vulnerability to coffee leaf rust, which severely affects the dominant Tekisic variety. As a Sarchimor derivative it carries partial resistance inherited from the Timor Hybrid parent (which carries Robusta-lineage rust resistance genes). Its medium-altitude adaptation makes it accessible to a wide range of Salvadoran farms.

Cup Quality

No cup profile data is available in this source. Sarchimor-derived varieties can show lower cup quality than pure Arabica lines in some growing conditions; performance at El Salvador’s medium altitudes should be verified against cupping data.
