Catisic

Catisic is an Arabica variety developed in El Salvador in 1977 by PROMECAFE (the Regional Cooperative Program for the Technological Development and Modernization of Coffee) through pedigree selection. It was created by crossing Timor Hybrid 832/1 with Caturra.

Agronomic Profile

  • Lineage: Timor Hybrid 832/1 × Caturra (pedigree selection)
  • Released: 1977 (PROMECAFE)
  • Disease resistance: Improved resistance to coffee leaf rust and other diseases, inherited from the Timor Hybrid parent
  • Adaptability: Bred for cultivation in regions like El Salvador; better adaptability than older cultivars

Context

Catisic belongs to the same generation of disease-resistant breeding work that produced Cuscatleco and other Timor Hybrid derivatives across Central America. Like Cuscatleco, it was created to reduce dependence on Tekisic and Bourbon varieties, which are highly susceptible to coffee leaf rust (Hemileia vastatrix).

The Timor Hybrid parent brings partial rust-resistance genes; Caturra contributes compact plant size and higher productivity compared to Bourbon.

Cup Quality

No cup profile data is available from this source. Catisic has been used in Salvadoran breeding programs but is less widely known commercially than Pacamara or Pacas. Verify cup data against primary research if needed.
