Coffee Value Assessment (CVA)

The Coffee Value Assessment (CVA) is the SCA’s new framework for evaluating and communicating coffee quality. It was developed as the evolution of the traditional SCA cupping scoresheet (which produced a single 100-point score) and aims to provide a more complete, objective description of each coffee lot’s value profile. What Makes CVA Different from Traditional Cupping

The traditional SCA cupping protocol produces a single numeric score (specialty threshold: 80+). The CVA integrates three distinct analysis types:

  • Descriptive analysis — systematic characterization of sensory attributes (aroma, flavor notes, acidity quality, body, aftertaste) using standardized vocabulary
  • Affective analysis — evaluation of overall liking and preference; acknowledges that value is partly subjective and audience-dependent
  • Physical/extrinsic analysis — assessment of green coffee physical properties (screen size, moisture, density, defects) that influence value beyond the cup

This multi-dimensional approach is intended to give producers, buyers, and roasters richer information than a single score allows — and to better communicate how and why a coffee is valuable to different market segments.

Relationship to the Traditional Cupping Scoresheet

The CVA supersedes but does not invalidate the traditional 100-point SCA cupping protocol. The older protocol remains widely used in the industry. The CVA is positioned as the updated standard for professional evaluation going forward, particularly in commercial and auction contexts.

The Q Grader (CQI) system uses a parallel evaluation framework and is not replaced by the CVA.

Training and Certification

Academia Barista Pro in San Salvador offers CVA training as part of its SCA certification portfolio — one of the first offerings of this protocol in Central America. The course is listed at the same price tier as other SCA modules (~$310 at Foundation level). (source: Academia Barista Pro (website, crawled 2026-05-16))

Relevance to Kaiserblick

As an export producer of specialty microlots, Kaiserblick will encounter the CVA framework increasingly in green coffee buyer relationships and auction contexts. Understanding CVA evaluation criteria enables:

  • Better preparation of lot documentation for European buyers who use CVA-informed purchasing frameworks
  • More nuanced communication of what makes each microlot valuable beyond its score
  • Alignment with the emerging industry standard before it becomes mandatory in export sales

Access to CVA training through Academia Barista Pro in San Salvador makes this certification reachable for Kaiserblick team members. (source: Academia Barista Pro (website, crawled 2026-05-16))
